myriad creatures

myriad creatures will headline this month at madame claude. they are originally from london, went to berlin more than two years ago, started liking it here and – stayed. they had been around a bit playing here and there, but especially at their favourite place, tacheles, a place of berlin underground culture and a major tourist magnet now threatened to be closed down, where they had something like their own monthly residency – and no surprise, the place and the band’s rehearsal space shared the same backyard; on the other side they shared with the hipster club scala, where also peaches studio was and some others – not the worst neighbourhood, and this in downtown, not even two years ago… but scala is history (so was the cinema before of the same name where the club only moved in later temporarily, always on the thread of being torn down, this beautiful old building), the rehearsal room is gone, and the band faced new changes. jim, former front man beside the other guitar player, andy, left the band to follow his own path – the remaining band consisting of andy, duncan and matt, got another andrew into the group… that’s their current new line up and only very few shows have been played so far, but more coming up soon. I have asked them a few times, but never had the chance – now they play a very rare half acoustic, or completely unplugged, show not to be missed! this summer they worked on their first release as new band, called Kill your Darlings, whatever it means, I think they screenprinted it themselves… their debut album was out last year, The right way to do wrong, and was produced by gordon raphael. there are no accidents in life – myriad creatures are quite friendly creatures and they hosted some parties back then at their studio, where more than half of the house was already empty for years, and they were told they had to leave finally too: I think it was on the very last of the last parties, when I asked some friends if they wanted to join to squat a neighbouring flat for a night and show some art? so we did. until someone must have fallen over the electric cable and the light went off… this year we have taken it a step further and brought the whole thing back to mitte, to neurotitan gallery- the show will open the same night, before the myriad creatures gig! december 3 rd. the last show of the year! and the official 7th-year-celebration – I wonder still how long they‘ll grow… this friday, MADAME CLAUDE!

myriad creatures famous former home, at the last ever party.

munch munch

tonight munch munch played finally in berlin! I think it was their first gig. we were meant to put them on over two years ago, but then the booker decided berlin is a risk… (so many bands that drop berlin on their first tours, there were a few last or this year, neon indian, starfucker – first finally played, second changed their name…) funnily the support band we chose really played that same night then at the same place in negotiation, without having a clue, fickscheisse (fuckshit) it was back then… times are changing and not for the better, everything is getting more commercial without end, one band changed their name, the other their sound, to be more digestible to business stomachs: some years I reckon munch munch was in one league with crazy weirdo hipsters like gay versus you (may they rest in peace – they are by the way together on a tiny but lovely 7′‘ compilation with tumbledown estate and lonely ghosts, done by brighton’s OIB records, who also put on nice shows from time to time – don‘t know if both bands still exist, but they got together in another awesome project I love, which is called nullifier), but now they seem like to want hard to sound like someone else, without knowing who, ending somewhere at an early klaxons‘ stage, although they don‘t even use guitars – beside the really trying opening tracks of their debut album „double visions“ leaning more towards artiness of bands like parenthetical girls, there are still slightly more refreshing tracks, wedding being one I consider of having „success“ with the public – but then, it finds itself already on my what-should-people-listen-to-compilation from 2008 – and right, it was out on tomlab as 7′‘ in 2007. I think you can hear the different times of creation on the record, but listen yourself, it’s not that bad after all, and sometimes things need their time – bobby conn just celebrated his 1998 album and why not? (the gig was great, one and half hours, the whole album „rise up“ plus all his hits from we come in peace up to never get ahead – very nineties, it had actually something called harmonies – good for a change.)
